Chapter Nineteen

Maddy

Just as I step out of the car, my phone buzzes to life, and I curse as I take the call. Who on Earth is it? Please tell me none of the vendors have pulled out of the wedding, I feel like I’m just starting to get a handle on everything and I can’t lose it now.

“What’s up?” I greet the person on the other end of the line, but before I can say anything, Teddy starts to rush off in a blast of panic.

“The movie’s been delayed,” he blurts out to me. “And I don’t know when it’s going to get back on track. If it’s even going to get back on track…”

“Teddy, slow down,” I tell him, pausing as I pay the driver. I glance up at the venue we booked for this party. Even though we hired out the hotel for an earlier party, to accommodate other parents who might not be able to get childcare, it’s already starting to fill out, so Mila’s not going to notice me being absent for a little while. I can handle this, at least.

“Tell me what’s happening,” I order, ducking around the side of the building so I can get a little privacy.

“I have no idea,” he admits. “I just came in to work today, and the whole set is shut down. None of the crew are here, I called up one of the production managers, and they said something about creative differences. He was pretty vague, but I don’t know if that’s just his way of telling me there’s nothing going on anymore, or…”

I pinch the bridge of my nose between my fingers, and try to breathe. Dang it, this is the last thing I need today—it’s Mila’s wedding shower, and I want to be there for her, to be focused on helping out any way I can, not putting out fires at work.

“Don’t worry,” I tell him, doing my best to keep him calm. “I’ll find a way to handle this, you have my word. You take it as some time off, rest up, have a look over the script again. Come back fresh when things kick off, yeah?”

“Should I even stick with it?” he asks.

“Don’t make any decisions until we have the whole story,” I warn. “No point jumping to conclusions when you don’t know what’s going on yet.”

“I guess you’re right,” he mutters.

“I’ll get to the bottom of this,” I promise him. “I’ll call you as soon as I know anything, okay?”

“Sure,” he replies, and he hangs up. I can practically hear the nervousness coming off him in waves, and I don’t blame him. This is his first big break, and he must feel like it’s slipping through his fingers right now, that he’s losing control of it. I don’t want to waste this chance for him. I have to find out what’s going on.

Creative differences? It has to be something to do with Joey, right? I dial his number, and pace back and forth as I wait for him to answer.
